I'm the weirdo??

Some weird facts about me-you won't find any sort of disorders on the list which is I'm so grateful for.
Here it goes:

  • I make a weird sound when I drink
  • I bat my eye lash too many times on one state
  • I feel totally, like absolutely cool leaving my room in a mess
  • I feel unusually secure every time I look at my bookcase
  • I share a room with my mum which is the weirdest out of all
  • I get over excited to be in a bookstore
  • sometimes when I ride, I imagine myself a motogp rider
  • the flu is my monthly guest
  • I can't stand cold weather, but I prefer cold to hot one
  • I keep raising my spectacles every time I wear them

can't think of anything else at the moment to add up on the list :-)

I used to and still play!

The kids are enjoying the snake or ladder? Guess!

"Please stop pulling my ponytail!!", said the girl in white blouse.

"1, 2, 3, I'm counting. Stop starring, you're making me nervous."
"Well, I'm just checking that you're not cheating!"

We have this monthly program at ABC Elementary School so called Students Day. We have it on every first Saturday of each month. What we normally have is something non-academic such as making some handy craft and having a go on batik or jumputan.
Last Saturday it was kind of an unusual theme we chose-games. We made it a bit like a class meeting where one class should compete against others. The sixth grade competed against the fifth on volley ball. The fourth grade competed against the third on badminton. While the second and the first grade played some traditional games such as dakon, krupukan, bekel, monopoly and snake and ladder-though the last two games appear to be not our (Indonesian) traditional games.
This is how we, ABC Elementary School contributes to preserving Indonesian tradition. And by the way, is there any better way to preserve one’s culture and tradition than to introduce them to young generation?
Love being a part of the most unique and various tradition! xoxoxo

sometimes you make the giggles during your teaching..

We were talking about the weather this morning at school. We started the class by doing some sort of vocabulary exercises. I divided the pupils into pairs and gave each pair a set of picture cards showing many different kinds of weather such as sunny, windy, stormy and foggy. There were fifteen cards altogether.
First activity was to memorize all those new vocabularies by playing a kind of memorising game. I had the pupils spread the picture cards out face up on the table, so that they could see them. The pupils took turns to pick a card up and named the weather. Ones who named the weather correctly kept the card whereas ones who named it wrong put it back. The winner was the player who collected most cards at the end.
After a while when I thought they kids were ready with their new vocabulary, we moved to the advance activity which was making sentences. This was necessary to help the pupils be able to use the vocabulary they have learnt communicatively and appropriately. Some bright pupils were eager to demonstrate their ability in making good correct sentences. Many sentences were produced- it was rainy last night at my place, it is sometimes icy in the winter, it is sunny and hot in the summer, then one pupil made a go and said, It is really windy in exit.” For a couple of seconds I was perplexed, but then burst into laughter! Apparently, what this pupil meant was “it is really windy outside”. LOL.
In Indonesia outside means diluar, while exit means keluar. Due to the limited vocabulary-the pupil considered outside the same as exit, so the sentence was produced. What a relaxation!

I love you, kids! xxxx

The Jack Fruit Monsters

We consider ourselves The Jack Fruit Monsters as we are all crazy about it and able to finish one giant jack fruit up in not more that an hour.

The hunt started at 9 o'clock. We went to an area called Dayu, up in a mountain. There were seven of us all together. We opened our eyes widely along the way. On the bank of the street we could see loads of jack fruit smiling at us, well at least that's how they looked like this morning-so mouth watering that we couldn't help smiling. We decided to park our car instantly and picked one big jack fruit after such a battle.

We hunt, eat and adore jack fruits. LOL

Between Learning and Playing

Let’s begin with one simple question, “What do you think a kid would prefer-studying or playing?” If I were the kid, I’d prefer the latter without doubt. Recently, more and more teaching techniques are introduced, the old curriculum has been revised over and over again in order to find, let’s say the most appropriate method that meets the thirst of fun learning atmosphere that could lead to a good academic achievement at the same time.

I am not referring to a certain disciplines here as I try to see the teaching itself as a whole context, not as parts which has different content in it. Every educator who educates any subject matter to young learners should have the same point of view that those children are supposed to feel fun in the classroom, no matter what class they are in. An acquaintance of mine once said that children are supposed to play, and to learn is not actually the main subject of their worlds. I couldn’t agree more to the idea as I remember as a kid I was one who loved going to school just to meet my friends and play with them.

Some parents expect their children to achieve more than they can manage to achieve. They insist on their children joining a bunch of courses which they believe would increase their skill-either academic or non academic, apart from the time they have to spend at school. What a heavy burden for a young person! As educators to those young learners, it would be wise to consider the fact I have mentioned. Try to provide a fun learning atmosphere is one of the expected attitudes. This is even kind of becoming a significant qualification we should meet nowadays.
Helping our pupils to achieve is of course necessary, but helping them to love and enjoy the process is even more necessary as once they do, they won’t stop doing it.

So start finding effective ways to arrange our pupils’ learning without eliminating the element of fun. They are just kids after all. Good luck!
