sometimes you make the giggles during your teaching..

We were talking about the weather this morning at school. We started the class by doing some sort of vocabulary exercises. I divided the pupils into pairs and gave each pair a set of picture cards showing many different kinds of weather such as sunny, windy, stormy and foggy. There were fifteen cards altogether.
First activity was to memorize all those new vocabularies by playing a kind of memorising game. I had the pupils spread the picture cards out face up on the table, so that they could see them. The pupils took turns to pick a card up and named the weather. Ones who named the weather correctly kept the card whereas ones who named it wrong put it back. The winner was the player who collected most cards at the end.
After a while when I thought they kids were ready with their new vocabulary, we moved to the advance activity which was making sentences. This was necessary to help the pupils be able to use the vocabulary they have learnt communicatively and appropriately. Some bright pupils were eager to demonstrate their ability in making good correct sentences. Many sentences were produced- it was rainy last night at my place, it is sometimes icy in the winter, it is sunny and hot in the summer, then one pupil made a go and said, It is really windy in exit.” For a couple of seconds I was perplexed, but then burst into laughter! Apparently, what this pupil meant was “it is really windy outside”. LOL.
In Indonesia outside means diluar, while exit means keluar. Due to the limited vocabulary-the pupil considered outside the same as exit, so the sentence was produced. What a relaxation!

I love you, kids! xxxx
